潮州八邑会馆联合9署会举行成年礼 200潮籍子弟出花园



38名潮籍子弟集体喝凉茶，象征成年期的从新开始。

柔佛潮州八邑会馆联合9个署会，今早同步为约200名潮籍子弟，进行传统成年礼“出花园”仪式。

其中，新山区有38名潮籍男女进行这项仪式。之后由行礼者请家人吃饭，当一天的成人“当家做主”。

出席见证这场仪式者有该会副会长萧进才、陈振发、总务郑志发、马潮联青总团长李富新、柔潮联青团长纪继耀等人。

柔佛潮州八邑会馆第一副会长陈泰昌博士致词时指出，潮籍子弟15岁接受“出花园”仪式后，有做成人心里的准备，在他们15至21岁的成长过程有优势。

他说，该会举办这项传统活动，体现潮籍人重视伦理，以及父母对孩子的关爱。

此外，柔潮联谊会值年主席陈耀宽透露，霹雳州明年可能会和柔州一起举办这项活动，让这项出花园仪式可以迈向全国，日后甚至发展至全球。

Chaoshan is a region in China famed as a homebase for members of overseas Chinese communities, with millions in the diaspora hailing from its shores. Chaoshan (Teochew) culture is important to the Chinese community in Singapore. Chen Zuo Hui, well-known performer of Teochew gongs and drums, leader of the Guangdong Chinese Orchestra, will perform signature pieces of the Southern Chinese repertoire. Top Teochew opera actors from Shantou - Sun Xiao Hua and Lin Chu Fa - will take centrestage with the Nam Hwa Opera's Doreen Low, Chua Ai Peck, Goh Hui Ling and Tan Kok Lye, to perform a string of Teochew opera classics.

Mr Koh’s dialect picture book comes in three versions, Cantonese, Hokkien (above) and Teochew. He plans to produce editions in other dialects as well.

To teach his young nephew the names of some everyday items in dialect, social worker and art teacher Koh Kuan Eng drew flash cards.

Then his friends started asking for them as well.

Said Mr Koh, 46: "It got me thinking: How did I learn English and Mandarin, and how do children pick up their first few words? Picture books!"

So the former creative director of an advertising agency came up with a set of picture books depicting 50 everyday things that he named in Hokkien, Cantonese and Teochew.
